What UK rock and roll indie group can count the late David Bowie as a greatest fan, the late John Peel as a an angel on its shoulder, a rightful claim as an original beginner of the whole club floor movement , from Ibiza to the USA and one of the fiercest live reputations of the entire 80s until the present day, be thrown off the Smiths tour for blowing them off, personally invited by Prince to support and still 30 years on, be the cream of the crop at any multi band event? The Woodentops and only the Woodentops can make that claim. Dj’s remixed others to success but the Woodentops did it by themselves. The dj’s played the Woodentops live on the dance floor and still to this day it is the same.
Taking the DIY punk ethic and working under an anti name the Woodentops quickly grew from the shy to the immensely Rock and Roll, mixing Afro beat, Electro and smooth song writing with unstoppable energy, playing faster than seemingly possible and at the same time capable of producing atmospheric and haunting melody that sucks you in, from the heart . It is time for the Woodentops to collect their dues.
It is the 30 year anniversary of the hit album Giant, the club sensation Why Why Why and the live album Hypno Beat Live and the ferocity is intact. Nobody can touch this band for character, originality and musical understanding. For a long time it was always said The Woodentops were ahead of their time, a lengthy break though has given us time to catch up with them and understand they are far away from the pack and very much on top of the game.
